Silver Lake Sand Dunes Jeep Invasion – Michigan Jeep Event Guide

Dates: Memorial Day Weekend May 28th - 31st
Location: Silver Lake Sand Dunes, Mears, Michigan

The Silver Lake Sand Dunes Jeep Invasion is one of Michigan’s largest and most anticipated Jeep® events, bringing thousands of Jeep owners and enthusiasts together for a weekend of off-road fun, community, and dune-driving excitement. Held annually around Memorial Day Weekend, this event transforms the Silver Lake area into a hub for Jeep culture, parades, trail rides, and family-friendly activities.

This guide is designed to serve as an informational resource for anyone planning to attend — covering event highlights, arrival details, dune requirements, and helpful tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Event Overview

  • Typical Timing: Memorial Day Weekend May 28th - 31st
  • Location: Silver Lake Sand Dunes – Mears, MI
  • Event Type: Jeep gathering, parade, and dune riding event
  • Activities: Jeep parade, poker run, dune rides, vendor activities

Arrival & Check-In Information

Event headquarters are typically located at Golden Township Park, situated near the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. Participants entering with their Jeep are required to follow designated arrival routes and check-in procedures.

The only authorized entry for Jeep parking and event access is off the traffic circle at the intersection of Hazel Road and Silver Lake Road, near the heart of the Silver Lake business district.

Parking volunteers will be on site to assist with traffic flow and event entry.

Jeep Parade to the Dunes

The Jeep Parade to the Dunes is one of the signature moments of the weekend. Jeeps line up and parade through Silver Lake before heading onto the dunes for a group photo and open riding.

  • Parade typically takes place Saturday morning
  • Lineup begins earlier in the morning prior to parade start
  • Participants must meet all dune requirements to join the parade

Poker Run

The annual Poker Run usually takes place on Friday and features multiple routes through the Silver Lake area. Participants collect cards along the route for a chance to build the best poker hand by the end of the run.

Dune Riding Requirements

To participate in dune riding and the Jeep Parade onto the dunes, vehicles must meet Michigan DNR requirements. These requirements are strictly enforced.

  • Street-legal Jeep only (no trailers)
  • Front-mounted square orange safety flag on a 10’ pole
  • ORV Pass and Trail Pass
  • Recreation Passport or Non-Resident Sticker
  • Tires aired down (typically max 15 PSI)
  • Seatbelts for all occupants
  • Eye protection (windshield, goggles, or face shield)
  • Spark arrester exhaust
  • Helmets required for occupants not protected by roll bars
  • No alcohol permitted on the dunes

All stickers and permits can be purchased at the Silver Lake State Park Welcome Center or through the Michigan DNR.

Where to Stay

Accommodations in the Silver Lake area fill quickly during Jeep Invasion weekend. Options include local campgrounds, vacation rentals, and nearby hotels. Silver Lake State Park Campground is a popular option for those looking to stay close to the dunes.

Additional lodging and area information can be found through local tourism resources.

Trailering & Stock Jeep Information

Trailering Your Jeep

Jeep vehicles participating in the dune parade must be street legal. Trailering participants may be required to obtain a parking lot voucher and join the group once access to the dunes is permitted.

Stock Jeeps

Stock Jeep vehicles are welcome at Silver Lake Sand Dunes. The primary requirements are proper tire pressure and a mounted safety flag. Many stock Jeeps successfully navigate the dunes each year.

Dune Riding Tips

  • Pay attention to orange safety flags and oncoming traffic
  • Start the day with a full tank of fuel
  • Avoid dune riding if your vehicle is overdue for maintenance
  • Know water depth before entering low areas
  • Wear seatbelts at all times
  • Drive responsibly — the dunes are fun but can be dangerous

Final Thoughts

The Silver Lake Sand Dunes Jeep Invasion is a cornerstone event for Michigan’s Jeep community. With proper preparation, attention to safety, and respect for the dunes, it offers an unforgettable experience for Jeep owners of all experience levels.
